Man in the sunset of success

The definition of success means different things to different people. Being successful in your career is no coincidence.  When you look at some of the world’s most successful people Richard Branson, Steve Jobs, Oprah Winfrey, Bill Gates, J.K Rowling, Nelson Mandela to name a few there is a common thread in the source of their success – passion, determination, hard work, integrity & the ability to learn from your mistakes!

Here are some of the daily habits that the world’s most successful people adopt – try adding few of these to your daily schedule and see what you can achieve;

1. Get up early!

Successful people are not sleeping in! Everyone complains about not having enough time – if you want time, you must make it! Getting up early allows you to focus on tasks with minimal interruption. Richard Branson wakes at 5am & starts with exercise and breakfast with the family & gets onto his emails before most of the world logs on.Get up early!

2. Passion in your profession

Successful people have made their passion their profession or career. They LOVE what they do. Nelson Mandela spent 27 years in prison and never gave up on his cause for equal rights. He became the international face of Apartheid from inside a prison cell!

At 13 Bill Gates became entranced with computers & spent much of his free time on them. He wrote a tic-tac-toe program allowing users to play against the computer. At age 15 he went into business with Paul Allen and in 1975 Microsoft was born.

If you are passionate about what you do then chances are success will follow. An American lady became an internet sensation, worth an estimated $100 million, by simply posting photos of her grumpy cat – her passion! Which goes to show anything is possible if you are passionate about the cause!

3. Set Goals

Successful people set measurable and specific goals that they hold themselves accountable for. If you don’t have a goal – what hope have you of achieving it?

4. Work Smarter

Successful people work smarter. Use your commute to catch up on emails or learn a new skill over a podcast or audio book. Set up email template replies to save time on your always consuming inbox. Hold your meetings over a coffee not lunch that can often be drawn out. Richard Branson holds his meetings walking!

Do your research, there are hundreds of apps that can save you time on everyday tasks - freeing up more time for the tasks that move you closer to achieving your goals. Compile a daily list and prioritise your tasks.

No one is an expert at everything. Swallow your pride & don’t waste your time on tasks that would be more efficient to outsource.

5. Look after yourself

Your ability to be successful is hampered if you are not on top of your game health wise. Successful people are often under significant pressure or stress so it’s important to look after yourself. Sufficient exercise, a balanced diet and drinking lots of water all contribute to good health.

Other common practises adopted by some of the world’s most successful entrepreneurs include Meditation & Yoga. Oprah meditates every morning to calm her mind to enable her to think clearly & make good decisions.

6. Personal  growth

Successful people are constantly updating their skill set, learning from their mistakes and seeking out others for information. They actively listen and ask questions and take notes. Knowledge is power and will help you adapt and evolve in business.

7. Determination, hard work & positivity

To be successful in your career you need to think positively. If you don’t believe in yourself how can you expect others to! If you look at people like Steve Jobs, Bill Gates and Richard Branson for example – negativity doesn’t enter the equation, they start their thought process with “How can we achieve this……” – to them anything is possible with a little determination and research.

J.K Rowling was rejected 12 times by publishers before Bloomsbury finally picked up her title Harry Potter & the Philosophers Stone which went on to sell 450million copies worldwide! Another example of how hard work and determination pays off.

It’s no accident these people are among the world’s most successful entrepreneurs. These 7 common elements all play a part in the secret of their success. How many of these can you implement into your career plan?

"Successful entrepreneurs don’t wait for the perfect moment, they create it" – Richard Branson
