This New Year why not liven up your travel consulting job! Ever considered the glitz and glamour and fantastic perks of careers in the Events industry?
Often referred to as MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences & Events) this sector is currently thriving! Whether sports, music, weddings, corporate or special interest is your thing, there are event jobs to suit all personalities!
Now the good news is, being a Travel Consultant already puts you ahead of the competition. There are many similarities between the two roles. Building itineraries with flights, activities and accommodation are the fundamentals of a travel agents job, these also form the foundation of many Event Management roles as well.
Being highly organised with good attention to detail and the ability to multi-task are essential skills for most Travel Consultants. Add to this the ability to think on your feet, remain calm when things go wrong, relate well to people and possess a creative flair and you have just about qualified for your first Event Manager position. Things to consider before you make your move;
Type of Event Company you wish to join
Agency – Event Agencies specialise in designing, managing and delivering events on behalf of their clients. Depending on the agency, these clients could be; corporate businesses, sporting groups, entertainment/music festivals, individuals planning weddings or parties etc.
Venue – Here you would arrange events solely at a specific location/ venue eg. The Opera House- Australia, Royal Albert Hall- London, a luxury resort or hotel chain at a specific location, a sporting stadium like Impact Arena - Bangkok, Taronga Zoo- Sydney etc.
Implant – Many larger corporate organisations (including corporate travel agencies) have dedicated events teams internally that handle all their events, conferences & meetings.
Types of Events you wish to arrange
These days there are events held for just about anything. Decide where your passion lies, then locate an agency, venue or implant that handles these types of events. Some examples include; weddings, corporate events, music festivals, entertainment, sporting events, catering events, company incentive trips, leisure or special interest events.
