We hear it time and time again as recruiters, I’d love to apply for such and such role, but I've not got any experience in that industry. Let us tell you the 4 reasons why you should still take the plunge and apply for the job.
1. Sector knowledge can be learnt if you've got the right skills
If you have been on the job hunt for a while and then suddenly a dream role appears, but it's not in a sector you have worked in before. Don’t immediately rule it out! While 90% of job ads will all ask for industry experience, ultimately sector knowledge can be learnt on the job as long as you’ve got the right skills to start with.
Examples of roles that TMS Talent has seen seamlessly transfer across sectors are digital and technology specialists, operations, marketing, graphic design, finance and accounting. Even to some extent sales and business development roles.
“It's about adapting your CV and carefully highlighting how your skills are relevant to your new market. It's about being versatile enough to say I'm willing to learn, but convincing employers you are able to bring something new to the table” says Jamie Ware Assoicate Director at TMS Talent.
2. Leading employers' value an outsider's perspective
With so many employers looking to reinvent their businesses and challenge the status quo, many are enthusiastic about hiring talent in from outside their sector to inject new capabilities and provide the business with an objective fresh set of eyes.
“Take hospitality employers for example, many of our clients are looking outside traditional hires within the sector to find people equipped with digital skills to grow their business by selling through online channels” says Peter Jackson Senior Recruitment Consultant Hospitality
COVID has forced many businesses to adapt, remain nimble if they want to remain viable. So hiring those with different skills from outside their sector has become more important than ever.
3. Attitude and enthusiasm matters
Let us fill you in on a little secret... “So many times I've spoken with a hiring manager after an interview and all they talk about is how fantastic the person’s attitude was and their level of enthusiasm for the role.” says Jamie
In an interview if you can demonstrate how passionate you are about the sector you want to join and show you truly care about the role and why you want to work for that company, 9 times out of 10 the job is yours before you even leave the interview room.
“A positive attitude and genuine enthusiasm can't be faked. If you’ve got it and this is your dream job...what are you waiting for? Seriously just apply! ” Jamie comments.
4. You just never know
Stop second guessing! If you don’t apply you will never know. Perhaps before applying a great place to start would be to talk to someone from that sector or who knows the sector well to determine if it’s the right fit for you.
Hint hint...like your friendly recruitment friends, yes us...over here. We’d love to hear from you!
Stop letting sector experience hold you back for applying for your dream role. Your next career move is waiting for you and it's just around the corner.
